Again, this week thank you all for being so supportive and encouraging. I managed only 2 laps today before being just totally done. I was getting so shaky through some of the slippery ‘S’ turns. I missed one turn an almost ran over a spectator. Hey, I did make it through both sand traps, both times, without falling. Next week is Indian Lakes and another chance to finish a race. I wish I had stuck around to talk with everyone, but I was just too beat. A number of my friends from the Elmhurst Bike Club rode up to see me race, too!! What a blast and can you believe the weather!?
BTW, I’ve a room at the Hilton for next Friday night. It’s a double so there’s plenty of room and room for a roll-away. Email me off line if you’re interested.

What’s up with obnoxious ref? Is there some kind of rule that we are supposed to stand around for 10 minutes before the start, because I didn’t see one anywhere. My not being there 10 minutes ahead has never delayed a race, but if I am supposed to be then it should be made clear.
We’ve had problems with the CCC races staying on schedule, and since we have to do a roll-call at the start, we’ve been told to stage no more than 5 min before race starts, though we’re shooting for 10, so that we can keep to the schedule. It’s common practice in ALL races- road, cx, whatever- that start time is when the whistle blows to go for your race, not when to arrive for instructions, check-in, etc. At bigger races it’s common to stage as much as 15 min before scheduled start. This keeps things on schedule so that when you warm up and take your gel packet for an expected race start time, it happens when you expect it to!
Listen for a whistle, you’ll always hear it before your staging.
Sorry, I was a little stressed I had all 4 kids with me too small to leave unattended. Usually I’ll hear the whistle but I don’t think I was close enough to hear it Sunday.
I didn’t mean to get all hot-headed on you. Everyone has been doing such a good job keeping the races on time. So at least now I know I need to be at the start earlier-gotta make sure that Roctane kicks in at the right time!
Thanks for your help. You’re not obnoxious, apparently it’s me.
On a completely unrelated note, hooray for officials who sacrifice their own racing in order to serve the community! Yay! Thank you, guys. You did great today. We’re very lucky to have you, and to have you sweating the details like checking numbers before races.
Here, here! The officiating has been fantastic, and if it weren’t for the officials, Chicago Cross Cup wouldn’t be able to post results so quickly. Thanks, officials!
The officials were indeed amazing. Registration was spot on and the course was a blast. Thank you for all that you do and your dedication ChiCross folks!
Yeah, I have to echo the compliments to the officials. Plus having the volunteers working the parking lots to make sure we knew where to go and where not to go was a nice touch this weekend.
This whole series is run really well, the courses have been a blast and I really appreciate all the work that goes in to making a race possible.
It’s not that I don’t appriciate what the officials do, but one of them was really rude to me and I honestly didn’t know I was supposed to be at the start that early. So far no one has been able to tell me any different.
A BIG THANKS to YOU, THE RIDERS for another great day of racing!
Also, a “Thanks for Understanding” to the 1/2/3 Men, for the delay in doing a warm up loop. The score sheets still showed one more rider was on course to finish, then it was confirmed this rider DNF. (This is why we ask to let us know if you are going to DNF.) The sand pit skating escapades were hilarious!
Yes, there is a rule for the 10 minutes – “5D1”. During these 10 minutes, we do roll–call, check numbers, give start instructions and do ‘call ups.’
Thanks to all the volunteers and officials for putting together a terrific race. That was an awesome course and a blast to ride. On another note, my wife, who was watching the 4B race near the treacherous Muddy Switchback section near the popcorn wagon, informed me that there was a spectator who was running to retrieve water from the pond so he could dump it on that section of the course. So are there rules regarding spectators altering the course during a race? I think folks were having a hard enough time with that section by that point in the day, so why someone found it necessary to make it even more difficult is possibly a good concern to bring up. Any thoughts? (Note: I made it through that section on all 5 laps unscathed, so it’s not like my wife is bitching because I fell in the mud. She just thought the guy was lame.)
Good point Benschomatic… spectators should never, ever, ever alter the course. If there was someone adding water to the course and you’d like to make your own course… contact us offline and we can talk about you hosting your own race in 2010.

Hi! I’m your obnoxious ref! (We’re human, too.)

Thank you to the officials and ChiCross crew. Staging and starts have been consistently on time because of them.

Thanks to the all the officials who GAVE UP THEIR OWN RACE so that they could baby sit us. Means a lot. You guys rock. Thanks

Thank you for answering my question! I’ll be there 10 mins ahead of the start from now on then.
