CCC Tuesday Updates – 20200616
Hi all,
We here at the Chicago Cyclocross Cup hope everyone is safe, healthy, and doing fine. Cyclo-cross racers are no strangers to health issues, struggling, and adversity, but even by our standards 2020 has been a rough year and we’re not even half way through yet.
By now all of you are hopefully aware of the ‘Restore Illinois’ plan developed by the state government and Illinois Department of Public Health. The state of Illinois is currently in Phase 3 and under this plan groups of 50 people or more (i.e. CCC events) are not allowed until the state/region is in Phase 5.
“Phase 5 – Illinois Restored: With a vaccine or highly effective treatment widely available or the elimination of any new cases over a sustained period, the economy fully reopens with safety precautions continuing. Conventions, festivals and large events are permitted, and all businesses, schools and places of recreation can open with new safety guidance and procedures in place reflecting the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
We obviously cannot predict the future and we have no way of ensuring when we’ll get to Phase 5. But you know we love numbers and stats and we’ve been paying close attention since early March and find it hard to believe we’ll have a vaccine or Illinois will be COVID-19 free by late September.
So with all that in mind, as of today we are cancelling the 2020 Chicago Cyclocross Cup series. Without a vaccine or widely available highly effective treatment there’s just no way we could guarantee everyone’s safety. And we would need to be putting the finishing touches on lots of details right now in order to ensure the series is kept up to the standards you all have come to know, expect, and deserve. So postponing any longer would not allow us enough time to effectively organize the series.
We know this news will be sad news for everyone, and we never thought we’d have to write these words. But like several times in the past, we’d much rather write them now than an apology letter to someone’s loved ones later after they get sick or worse. Its a sucky decision but actually an easy one.
Most of you are probably unaware that the CCC doesn’t actually run any of the events in the series. Instead each event is hosted and run by separate race promoters/directors that agree to the same schedule, rules, scoring, etc. So with all that being said, there is a very, very outside chance some of the individual race promoters may still be able to host their events later in the Autumn if conditions and regulations allow. If that becomes the case we will of course post news here for everyone. But until that time the site will be mostly silent. Feel free to drop us a line at [email protected] if you have any questions or need additional info.
Until then, and most likely until 2021, take care of yourselves and each other. Stay safe, stay healthy, smile under your face mask even if other people can’t see it, and keeping riding your bike!!!
A tough call. Thank you for thinking of us.
Thanks for putting the health of our community first. 🤙For the record though, I would have killed it this season.🤣
Anson, I hereby grant you an honorary Cat 1 upgrade.
Congrats dude!
My debut season in the 50+! I’ve been eyeing a comeback for years. But in all seriousness, this is leadership. Be safe. #CrossIsComing (albeit delayed)
“And, It is Too Windy for my Hour Attempt!”
Be Safe, Thank you for keeping us updated.
Not a surprise but deep inside I had a little bit of hope. Thanks ChiCrossCup. I’ll still be out in the grass and mud, getting ready for next year.
Okay, what about Nationals? Maybe Indiana or Wisconsin?
Very sad indeed, but the correct call. More time for training and getting better.
Oof, tough to read these words but it shows you’re looking out for everyone the best you can.
Hope to get back to Chicago soon and toe the line one more time!
Thanks Tim!
How will Indian Lakes make it through the winter?
Thank you CCC for everything you do. I will miss our CX community mightily this season but I know we will all be back better than ever in 2021. Enjoy the trails and keep the CX tires rolling even if we can’t be racing.
Absolutely the right decision. Thank you for all that you do!
As much as I would love to race, I appreciate your decision. Thank you for keeping us safe.
Time to bring our anonymous “Bandit Cross” coordinator outta of hiding/retirement…..
I, and so many others, appreciate all of the work you put into the CCC. Thanks and see you next year.
Organizers have not good reason to stick their necks out in this toxic society. Wisconsin after the April 7th election saw new cases fall 28%. On May 13th the Supreme Court slapped down (D) Evers overreach so Wisconsin is open. Deaths and positive tests are falling. Swiss Policy Research June 2020 says ‘the risk of death for the general population of school and working age is typically in the range of a daily car ride to work’. Illinois lets rioters and politicans run the show.
Totally support this decision. It will be back in a year and be better than ever, and I’ll be there.
@Chris Kremble..
If you don’t mind sending me your address, I’d like to pay for and have delivered a reputable newspaper subscription to your home.
On a more pertinent note…looks like this week Illinois just redid their phases..now saying phase 4 allows sporting events and larger gatherings. I wonder if this will impact any of the individual race organizers decisions as we get closer to cross season.
Of course…this all may be a moot point anyway. Kinda looks like we’re on the verge of having a relapse with the virus..
Fun stuff 😢
Still limited to 50 people or less.
Yea I did notice the 50 person thing. Maybe we can have a series just for 40 something cat 4s with bad hair who wear socks with sandals?!
*fingers crossed*
That would bee 55+ Ken. You can join me in 2 years.
