Good times. Huge props to xXx for putting on a great event and making a fun course out of featureless terrain. That said, what’s the story with Caldwell Woods? Is there anyway to get this race back over there? For one brilliant day two seasons ago Caldwell may have been the best course in the CCC. So much variety. So much flow.
Agreed Caldwell was an amazing course. I believe it was an availability issue; rescheduling the date around Trek/Jingle prevented us from securing Caldwell this year.
Tom pretty much hit the nail on the head, but I’ll claim some personal responsibility as well – planning a wedding earlier this summer meant putting off some of my race directing duties until later than I would have liked.
Caldwell will be back in the mix for next year, although it does present some unique challenges to accommodating field sizes of up to 150 riders. But that’s a matter to be dealt with next year – on to Hopkins!
Thanks for joining us yesterday and helping kick off the CCC!
I say this after every race and mean it every time: thank you so much to everyone who helped us celebrate the start of the CCC yesterday to LaBagh Woods. The Chicago CX vibe is always so positive, and when you throw in some great racing and a couple Svens it just can’t be beat.
And as always, I want to thank those who showed up just to make the party better for everyone else:
– Tim Tanner and Other Brother Coffee
– Chicago Pizza Boss
– Clif Bar
– Athletico for stretching out sore, cramped legs
– Finch’s Beer Co. for all the free beer.
Thanks of course to all of my xXx Racing teammates who showed up at the crack of 5am to set up the course and who stayed until after 8pm tearing it all down.
I’m so encouraged by the continuing growth of the Juniors and women’s fields – both in size and in quality of racing – as the sport reaches more and more people.
Oh, and did you happen to catch the Svens doing a hotlap of the course after the 4/5 race? They’re world champions; we assume they’re fast. But ho-lee crap those guys are fast: https://youtu.be/O08barBi3Rk
Looking forward to Hopkins Park and a great CCC series!
Nice job XXX Racing on everything you did. That includes smooth day with great course and all the amenities (coffee, beer, clif bars, etc), cool inflatable over start grid, set up day of (not easy to do), and Sven, and Sven. Also, double congratulations again for your two wins by Sol in the Jrs and Gaylord in the Masters!
Did anyone else notice half the Category 3’s in the top eight on the day began last year as a Category 5?
This is the category that thought their days of being beat up by a junior were over when Danny Warner’s son upgraded last year for Bartlett, only to have defending Cup series junior champion Juan Gonzalez take his place this year.
Please donate to West Town Bikes. They are doing some great things.
The ride of the day MAY be the Mr Ross from Dekalb. He won the 4/5’s after starting near the middle of the biggest field on the day (133).
The Pro Podium of Dan, Michael, and David were 2nd, 4th, and 7th last year.
Rider come. Riders go. We miss and hope to see Pike, Naughton, Gatto, Lombardo(s), Urban, Brandon F, Siebel, Hathaway, Ernst, among others…..
The other Junior Phenom (I called Sol that) Ella Neurohr won the Junior Women. She also outsprinted Kae to make the podium for the W3’s. That meant Sven honors. Both those podiums came via racing 10th in the Mixed Juniors, and 9th in the Elite Women races.
Three teams put two riders in the top seven of the Single Speed race. Mox, Comrade, and Cuttin Crew.
The top six juniors in the younger 9-14 Junior Boys category did 4 laps. The other 65 riders did 3 or less.
The final number of juniors for the day was 109. Or, should we say 110, because Juan (3’s Champ) did not race juniors. And I reserve the right to be wrong, in case a few others did the same (like Diego Arana)…..so maybe 111……
Elite Women’s 11th place was 3rd last year at Labagh. In the Category 4’s. Kelsey Phillips.
So much appreciation for all the racers, volunteers, and community that make up ChiCrossCup.
We are lucky to have the best amateur CX series in the country staffed with some of the most passionate cycling enthusiasts around. Kenny – Your color commentary, insightful racer tidbits and humorous anecdotes keep the CCC races interesting week after week. We are looking forward to another great season with you on the mike calling the races.
Couldn’t have said it any better. You are one of the few I like listening to when announcing races. Always witty and full of knowledge. And unfortunately for some of us, Naughton was at a WORS race standing on the podium as usual and will be back this year for most of the series.
Unfortunately my GoPro was at capacity and I only captured the first 11 minutes of the men’s cat 3 race.
Thanks xXx for all the work put in to make this race happen. The improvements to the course from last year made the race a lot more interesting in my opinion. (But yeah, would love to race at Caldwell again!)
What nobody takes photos anymore? Where are the links?! How am I supposed to waste time on a Tuesday if people don’t post links to photo sets? Daaaang.
Thanks, as always, for coming out and taking such awesome photos, and for cheering everyone on. It’s great to have you two on the sidelines! I’ll be there early enough to cheer Nathan on in the first race of the day at Hopkins in a few weeks.
I just realized that I left my helmet at Labagh Woods. It’s an off-white Bell (I think it’s a Bell anyway). It was in the podium area. Any chance someone picked it up?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply, Tom. Good to know Caldwell is still a possibility for the future. And thanks again to all the xXxers for a blast at LaBagh.

The most sincere thank you to the both of you for such nice words! The riders ARE the show! My job is to just point that out. I love doing it.
+2 for the Juniors in the Men Pro/1/2/3 race.
I was thinking the same thing the next day. 113 juniors now.

All we can say is between Labagh Woods and The Sven’s, this weekend was an embarrassment of cx riches.

There was a lost and found box that made it into the CCC trailer. Not sure of its contents, though, so be sure to ask at Hopkins.
Anyone see a polar watch on the ground? I smashed my arm into a stake and ripped it off ; (
A spectator brought it up to me and I did broadcast over the mike.
I have it. The band needs medical. Message me direct [email protected] or see you at Hopkins Park.
